The Living Room…Providing More than Just A Place to Put Your Feet Up
Tuesday, January 1, 2019
A ‘Living Room’ is defined as the room in a house or apartment where people sit or relax together. While simply defined, the essence of a living room is what gives it an emotion, a familiar feeling, and the permission to repose.
The newest addition to the State Street Mental Health Center at 1023 State Street, and a first of its kind in the Capital Region, The Living Room is a safe, comfortable, calming place within a healthcare setting, where guests facing mental health crises can seek help as an alternative to the Emergency Department. This new community resource, which opened this fall, offers further patient access to care, and is a collaboration between Ellis Medicine, Alliance for Better Health, and Rehabilitation Support Services (RSS). Following the announcement in July 2018 that Ellis would remain independent; this partnership is an example of how Ellis is serving our community as a collaborator by exploring innovative new partnerships, as well as new ways to deliver superior care to patients.
The team at The Living Room consists of Eileen S. McGachey, Supervisor of Psychiatry and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker; Julie Carvill, Care Manager; and Tele Rabii, a Peer Specialist. Additionally, advising medical professionals from Ellis Medicine will be consulted as needed.
The Living Room provides crisis diversion services to adults 18 and older with active Medicaid. Guests will be assessed for safety throughout the visit. Supportive therapy will be provided; coping skills and stress reduction skills will be explored. Services for mental health, substance abuse treatment, physical health providers, care management services, housing supports, and community resources are all available and provided according to the immediate needs of each individual who visits.
Guests are welcome to visit Monday through Friday from Noon to 8 PM, and can contact the Living Room team at 518-243-1523.
